Reading - World Business

As business becomes more and more international, the importance of understanding different cultural attitudes increases.

The Japanese are perhaps the world leaders in the amount of attention they pay to cross-cultural differences. They seem to feel not just that "When in Rome" they should "do as the Romans do", but that they should also try to understand the "Roman" way of thinking.

Westerners, in particular North Americans and northern Europeans, tend to regard business as a rational process, in which emotion should play little or no part.
Personal interaction leads to achieving company objectives; feelings are "unbusinesslike" and tend to confuse the issue.

In others culture, however, business is considered a more human affair, and can involve a whole range of emotions. Laughter, dramatic gestures and raised voices are all regarded as ligitimate strategies in business discussions.
Companies that can tune in to the cultural frequency of their foreign clients have a definite advantage.

A few years ago a California company in competition with a Swedish rival was trying to win a contract with a South American customer. The American product was better and cheaper. The U.S. team flew in and made a well-structured, professional presentation and they were convinced that the deal was in the bag (no papo).

On the other hand, by stretching their talks over several days, the Swedes allowed more time to get to know the customer. for six days they talked about everything except the product, introducing it only on the last day. In spite of having a less attractive and higher priced product, the Swedes won the contract.

They had realized that in the modern business world it is essential to adapt to the culture you are doing business with and that establishing a good working relationship with their prospective customer would be far more valuable than the slickest(mais esperta)presentation in the world.

Some steps for a Business Presentation

Então resolvi escrever algumas dicas sobre isso, so here we go...

...1) Introducing yourself
You can commence(começar) like this:
First of all, I'd like to thank you all for coming here today. My name is X and I am the (your position) at (your company).

Remember:
Estabelecer contato visual com os ouvintes é um ponto importante, sorria para quebrar o gelo(to break the ice).
Keys senteces:
I would briefly like to take you through today's presentation.... First, we're going to ... After that, we'll be taking a look at ... Once we've identified our challenges(desafios) we will be able to ... Finally, I'll outline(delinear, resumir) what ...

...2) Presenting the Current Situation
Keys senteces:
I'd like to begin by outlining our present situation... As you know... You may not know that ...

Remember
'As you know' or 'You may not know that' são maneiras de informar aqueles que não conhecem sem ofender aqueles que já conhecem certos fatos.

...3) Moving Forward

Keys senteces:
Let's take a look at some of the implications of this... Taking into consideration what we have said about X, we can see that Y... The main reason for these actions is... We have to keep in mind(ter em mente) that... when we consider... As a result of X, Y will ...

Remember

...4) Using Visual Aids

Keys senteces:
As you can see from this graph representing ... If you could just take a look at... Looking at X we can see that ...
Remember

...5) Mentioning Problems
Keys senteces:
Obviously, this has led to some problems with... Unfortunately, this means that... As a direct result of X, we are having problems with Y...This also causes ...

Remember

...6) Listing Options
Keys senteces:
There are a number of alternatives in this case... We can... If we had..., we would... Had we..., we could have... Do we need to X or Y? I think we can clearly see that we can either ... or ...We have been considering... What if we ...

Remember

...7) Providing Solutions
Keys senteces:
The solution to X is... I suggest we... Based on ... the answer is to... If we keep in mind that..., Y is the best solution to our problem.

Remember

...8) Summarizing:

Keys senteces:
We've discussed many points today... Let me quickly summarize the principal points... I'd like to quickly go over the main points of today's topic... Before we end, let me briefly recap(recapitular) what we have discussed here today.

Remember

...9) Finishing the Presentation
Keys senteces:
Thank you all very much for taking the time(tempo dispensado) to listen to this presentation... Now, if you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them... I think that's about it. I'd like to thank you all for coming in today. Do you have any questions?

Remember
I hope it helps you...maybe not this week...but who knows one of these days....
