The use of the Future in the Past

Hi there,

it sounds a bit strange the sentence "the use of the Future in the Past", doesn´t it?

...well...

...vejamos o exemplo abaixo pramodi explicar o uso do futuro no passado:

John was going to leave work when his boss called him.

You were going to have a party last night. What happened?

to be no passado+futuro going to+verbo, formam a nossa estrutura "estava indo..." ou simplesmente "ia"

Bom, por hoje é só.
See you and....keep up your studies.

Uso do will e going to

Quinta-feira, 13 de Setembro de 2007

Quando ou como usar "WILL" ou "I AM GOING"

Muitas vezes me perguntam quando usar will ou I am going(to).

I am going on holiday next Sunday;
I am going to Guarujá next weekend;

Mary will go to visit you.(ela irá mas não sabe quando)

Obs: Are you working tomorrow?e não Will you work tomorrow?.

Past Perfect (Simple)

I went to the meeting last week. Paul went to the meeting too but we did not see each other. Paul went home at 10 and I arrived at 10.30 o'clock. Then: When I arrived at the meeting, Paul was not there. He had gone home.

Had gone é o past perfect simple
Estrutura: had + past participle(gone, seen, worked...). Clique aqui para lista de verbos irregulares.
As vezes falamos de fatos que ocorreram no passado:
  • I arrived at the meeting.

  • When I arrived at the meeting, Paulo had already gone home.

Had done(past perfect) é o passado do have done(present perfect). Compare abaixo:

Present perfect:

  • Who is the girl? I have never seen her before
  • We are not hungry. We have just had lunch.

Past perfect:

  • I did not know who she was. I had never seen her before.
  • We were not hungry. We had just had lunch.

That's all for now folks. See you...

Present Perfect(continuous)

Hi there,

See the example below:
Is it raining?
No, but the ground is wet.

It has been raining.
Have, has been -ing is the present perfect continuous:

Usamos o present perfect continuous para alguma atividade que deixou recentemente de ocorrer ou simplemente não ocorre mais, e que exista uma conexão com o presente, o agora(now). Vejamos os exemplos para um melhor entendimento:

  • She is *out of breath. Has she been running?(She is out of breath now)
  • John is very tired. He has been working very hard.(He is tired now)
  • Why are your shoes so dirty? What have you been doing?
It has been raining for three hours.
  • It is raining now. It began raining three hours ago and it is still raining.
  • How long has it been raining?
  • It has been raining for three hours.

Também usamos o present perfect continuous desta maneira, principalmente quanto usamos how long(quanto tempo), for(por, há), e since(desde)...a ação ainda está ocorrendo(ex.acima). Vejamos outros exemplos com essa estrutura:

  • How long have you been studing English?(you are still studing)
  • Paul is still listening to the radio. He has been listening to the radio all day.
  • Where has Mary been? I've been looking for her for the last two hour.
  • Mike has not been feeling well recently.
  • Sue is a very good guitar player. She has been playing since she was nine.

*sem fôlego.

So my friends, I hope It helps you.

See you.

Present Perfect (Simple)

Hi everybody;

dando continuidade aos tempos verbais, veremos hoje Present Perfect(Simple):

Def.: estrutura do present perfect simples:

  • have/has + past participle

Ex.:

  • lose lost lost
  • do did done
  • go went gone
  • has had had
  • forget forgot forgotten

  • Where is your wallet? I don't know. I have lost it.(I havent' got it now)
  • She told her age but I've forgotten it.(I can't remember it now)
  • Is Paul here? No, he's gone out.(he is out now)

  • Ow! You have cut you finger.
  • The avenue is blocked. There has been an accident.

O present perfect pode ser usado também com just, already and yet:

  • Just = algo que acabou de acontecer. I have just received you email.
  • Already = algo que acabou de acontecer antes do esperado. He has already gone.
Have you cleaned the room yet?

  • Have you ever been to the USA?
  • I have never seen her before.
  • I have worked here for three years.
  • I have lived in São Paulo since 1975.

onde :

  • ever=já
  • never=nunca
  • for=por, ha
  • since=desde

I hope it helps you.

See you....

Past Continuous

Hi there,
Let's see the example below:
Yesterday I wrote an article. I began at 2 o'clock and finished at 3 o'clock. So, at 2.30 I was writing an article.

  • What were we doing at 2 o'clock this afternoon?
  • This time last year he was living in São Paulo.

Compare o past continuous (I was doing) e o past simple (I did):

Past continuous: (no durante da ação)

  • I was going home when I met John.
  • Paul was listenting to the radio when the door bell rang

Past simple: (complete action)

  • I went home after the party last night.
  • Paul listened to the radio a lot when he was ill last month.

  • His car broke when he was coming home.
  • I saw you in the theater last night. I was buying tickets to see the movie.

PS.: some verbs for example - know, want, believe - are not normally used in the continuous:

  • We were good friends. We knew each other well.(not, were were knowing)
  • I was watching the movie but Sonia wanted to to home.(not, was wanting)

So, that's all for now folks....see you...

Past Simple

See the exemple below:

Airton Senna was a F-1 pilot. He lived from 1960 to 1994. He had his first Kart at the age of four. He was only 34 years old when he died. He was a great champion:

was/lived/won/had are all past simple.

  • I lived in Campos do Jordão.
  • John invited Mary to his part but she decided not to come.

  • write====>wrote
  • have====> had
  • go======>went
  • come===> came

Em orações interrogativas e negativas usamos did/didn't + infinitivo:

  • What did you do on your vacation?(not, what did you on your vacation)
  • I didn't do anything.(not, I didn't anything)

O passado do verbo be:

  • am,is,are ====>was,were

Não é usado did em orações interrogativas e negativas com was, were:

I was worn out last night because I worked a lot. Why was I worn out last night?

She wasn't capable to be promoted. Well...that's all for now...bye bye!

PS - Airton Senna was mentioned because on May, 1st completed 13 years of his death. His determination is an example to be followed.

      Present Simple

Hi there...today is the "Labor day" and it is a beautiful day outside for a holiday, bright day, so we may take this chance and study English a bit...so here we go:

      Present Simple (I do)
      • We study English.
      • I usually go travel on vacations.
      • The earth goes round the sun.
Usamos do/does para perguntas e frases negativas:
      • I live in São Paulo. Where do you live?
      • Would you like a beer? No thanks, I don't drink.
      • What does this word mean? (not, What means this word?)
      • I give classes every day.(not I'm giving).
      • How often do you study English?(not How often are you studing?)
      • Maria does not drink milk very often.
      • In summer Bob usually swimms twice a week.
      Verbos como:
      • promise
      • apologise
      • advise
      • insist
      • agree
      • refuse
devem ser usados no present simple: ex: I promise I will be on time (e não I am promising) e assim vale para os outros também. PS: devemos usar - he,she,it -s. Não esqueça o s: I drive....mas He drives...She drives. Have a good day...bye bye I

      Present Continuous

      • Present and past
      • Present perfect and past
      • Future
Então, here we go(aqui vamos nós) and I hope you enjoy it(espero que você goste):
      Present Continuous: (I am doing)
      Let´s see the situation below:
      • John is in his car. He is on his way to work. He is driving to work.
It means: ele está dirigindo agora(uma ação continua). A ação não acabou. Am/is/are -ing = present continuous:
      • I am (I'm) writing
      • he,she,it is (he's etc) walking
      • we,you,they are (we're etc) playing etc....
      • You're studing hard today. (e não you study hard today)
      • Is Paulo studing this morning?
      • The population of São Paulo is rising very fast.(não "rises")
      • Is your English getting better? (não "does your English get better")
OK, that´s all for now....see you.
