Let´s see some ways to use the word "FREE".

As vezes achamos que podemos fazer qualquer coisa que quisermos, nesse caso nos sentimos free to do anything.
Mas nem tudo na vida é assim tão free, porém, aqui no blog você pode feel free(sinta-se livre, a vontade) para deixar seus comentários, suas dúvidas...eu até diria que o leitor tem free access(livre acesso).
É bom quando estamos em algum lugar, virtual ou não, e podemos nos sentir free and easy(relaxado) para discutirmos amigavelmente qualquer assunto. No entanto, temos que nos manter a free spirit(fazemos seja o que for, desde que aceito pela sociedade).
Agora, let me ask you, você tem estudado Inglês no seu free time, free day, free morning ou mesmo naquela free half-hour, free fifteen-minutes(tempo liver, dia livre, manhã livre, meia-hora livre ou quinze-minutos livre), bem, então se você tiver um free time, leia essa dica.
Acabou o uso da palavra free? não, há muitos ainda, por exemplo, alguma coisa que se compra livre de impostos dizemos tax-free, duty -free, a duty-free perfum, for instance. Agora por dedução tente, salt-free or sugar-free...conseguiu? okay, I give you an answer...algo que não tenha sal ou açucar.

Vocabulário: oito diferentes maneiras de usar a palavra Close:
1. Perto de: There is a mall close to the subway station.

Vocabulary : GAIN

Usamos a palavra gain quando obtemos ou alcançamos algo de valor. Ex.: She gained high grades in Math. Quando conseguimos algo gradualmente, mais e mais, assim teremos gain experience, gain support, gain reputation; podemos também nos tornar mais populares ou mais confiantes (gain in popularity or gain in confidence). Também podemos usar a palavra gain quando ganhamos pêso, velocidade ou altura; gain weight,speed,height.

Enriquecendo Vocabulário - Night

Night - the dark part of each 24 hour when the sun cannot be seen.

Muitas são as maneiras que podemos empregar a palavra "night", por exemplo se for viajar a noite podemos pegar um night bus/flight/train tão logo ao cair da noite(nightfall)and spend all night long(passar a noite todinha)viajando.

Se você já viajou e sabe como isso é, terá histórias pra contar night and day(o tempo todo).

Make a night of it, é o que os Americanos dizem quando saem para beber, dançar e curtir a noite. Night-clothes(roupas para dormir), mas quando se trata de roupas de dormir para mulheres, dizemos night-dresses ou night-gown. Pra quem é do tipo que gosta de ficar acordado a noite toda, que nós chamamos de "corujão", em inglês o chamamos de night-hawk ou night-owl.

Provavelmente algumas pessoas não foram pra balada na noite passada(last night), porque estavam cansadas após um dia de trabalho e ainda depois tiveram night school(estudam a noite), mas no Satuday night tudo pode acontecer.

E pra finalizar deixo aqui um night night que é uma maneira bem informal de se despedir de alguém ou mesmo quando se vai por as crianças na cama...night night babe!

Outros usos de "very"

Very - palavra que usamos dar enfâse ao um adjetivo ou advérbio, por exemplo:

She is very smart (adjetivo)
Thank you very much (advérbio)

Há outras maneiras que podemos usá-lo:

para dizer que alguma coisa é exatamente igual a outra - the very same(He bought the very same shirt as me);

para enfatizar algo que pertença à alguém - your very own(Julie is thinking of having her very own car).

Olá, espero que todos tenham tido boas festas, e como é o primeiro post do ano, quero desejar a vocês um Feliz 2008.

Então vamos trabalhar, segue abaixo um texto com vocabulário bem interessante de como descrever o tipo físico das pessoas. Aproveitem e até a próxima.

Remi: We need to get these costumes sorted out. I’m not sure we have ones that will fit each person in this play.

Bryan: Let’s see. We need a shirt for Hector. He’s broad-shouldered, so this one would be too small. Any luck finding one over there?

Remi: No, but I think I found a dress for Lee Ann. She’s petite and thin, and I hadn’t been able to find anything that would fit someone that slender. All of the other dresses are for women with either pear- shaped or hourglass figures.

Bryan: Okay, at least that’s some progress. What about Malcolm? Unlike his brother who is tall and skinny, he’s big and fat. How are we going to find one to fit him?

Remi: He’s not fat! He’s stocky. He is really muscular and not at all flabby. Oh, here’s a pair of pants that would fit Pierre. These are perfect, since he’s not long-legged like all of the other men.

Bryan: We’re actually doing pretty well, I think.

Remi: We just need a costume for you.

Bryan: Me?! What do you mean? I’m not in this play.

Remi: Oh yes, you are. Ike dropped out, so they need a replacement and you’re the only one who isn’t already in the play.

Bryan: Oh, no. I thought I could avoid being in the play by volunteering to help with the costumes!

Remi: Sorry, but I don’t think you can get out of it this time.

Foot

Simples, não é? Todos sabemos que foot é aquela parte do nosso corpo que nos leva para todos os lugares. Sim, isso mesmo e o plural é feet, são os nossos queridos pés.

Temos algumas expressões que podemos usar com feet ou foot. Começando, quando vamos a pé a algum lugar, dizemos on foot, He uses to go on foot to his work.
Put your foot down é uma maneira de dizer pisa fundo, para relaxar sentando-se e pondo seus pés pra cima, você pode usar put you foot up.

E como diriamos aquela expressão que usamos quando dizemos algo sem pensar, atropelando tudo...como é mesmo? meter os pés pelas mãos, em Inglês dizemos put your foot in it ou put you foot in your month.Além dessas, temos ainda be on your feet que significa ficar muito tempo em pé, salespeople are on their feet all day and are rushed off their feet e estão muito ocupados.

Ahh, foot/feet também é usado como unidade de medida(comprimento, altura), one foot = 12 polegas(inches), o que equivale a 30 centímetros; Mark is six feet tall(Mark tem 6 pés de altura).

Benign censorship, however, will ensure that the worst excesses of violence and propaganda are not beamed straight into our living room. Before anyone starts complaining that censorship is a bad thing remember that it is necessary in some circumstances.

For once the cynics and pessimists may have to be silent. The world we live in is shrinking - and as result we are all getting closer.

Week off

Hi there,

estive uma semana fora, resolví tirar uma pequena folga (a week off), a única coisa que fiz foi uma pequena atualização em um dos últimos posts e uma mudança na cor de fundo.
Motivo disso? I had a tough week(uma semana dura), quite a week(uma semana e tanto)...bem, mas estou voltando e para essa semana vou preparar alguns posts bem legais, com dicas, opiniões, etc..etc...

Bom, por enquanto fico por aqui, pois I have to get up at the crack of dawn.

To make one tick

I was watching a movie last night and I saw an expression like this:

...I would like to figure out what makes my players tick...

Apparently nothing wrong except for "makes my players tick".

After looking up some dictinaries, some books I found what this expression means. It is another way to say "I would like to figure out what motivates my players".

So now you have another expression to add to your expressions book, try to put it into pratice over your daily basis.

A Palavra Book

Hi there,

ontem o Denilso de Lima do Inglês na Ponta da Língua, publicou no blog English Experts um post Ampliando o Vocabulário: Book.
Eles iniciaram a Semana do Vocabulário, uma inaciativa muito legal para encrementar ainda mais o vocabulário.

Como o título mesmo já diz, o primeiro da série foi a palavra book, assim vou adicionar aqui no Englishcaffe mais algumas expressões com o uso da palavra "book", vamos lá:

Hit the books, significa estudar bastante(study very hard), só como curiosidade, ao pé da letra seria bater, derrotar o livro ou até mesmo como dizemos em Português comer o livro.

Every trick in the book, essa também é interessante, o significado é quando se tenta fazer de tudo para que algo dê certo(I tried everything possible but failed)provavelmente fazendo alusão de que fizemos tudo o que estava escrito no livro, todos os truques e segredos.

The police should book him; book nesta expressão aparece como fichar, que é o que acontece quando alguém vai preso(to arrest someone).

Usado também como slang(gíria), book que significa sair correndo no sentido fugindo run away quickly, after he broke the lamp, the kid booked.

e por último, pois todas não caberiam neste post, temos um significado mais técnico para a palavra book usado na área Contábil como "contabilizar", there are many invoices to be booked he's gonna book them later.

Em Inglês não esquecemos algo em algum lugar.....

....e sim deixamos algo em algum lugar. Deixa eu explicar melhor:

Em Portugês dizemos: Esqueci minha carteira no seu carro.

Quando esquecemos algo em algum lugar em Inglês, não usamos o verbo "forget" tal qual usamos o verbo "esquecer" no Português em concordância com adjunto adverbial de lugar(carro), portanto, a frase acima não poderia ser escrita:

I forgot my wallet in your car.

Assim, se queremos dizer que esquecemos alguma coisa, dizemos:

I forgot my wallet.

Agora, se quisermos mencionar o adjunto adverbial de lugar, para dizer que esquecemos algo em algum lugar, usamos o verbo "leave" e a frase fica assim:

I left my wallet in your car.

Uso de Remember and Remind

To Remember=====>tem o sentido de recordar;

• Rubb has a good memory, he can remember things that happened years ago.
• I remember living in the countryside where life was easier.

To Remind========>tem o sentido lembrar-se de alguma coisa ou de alguma pessoa.

• Mrs.Park has to remind Mr. Lawrence of a meeting at three o'clock.
• You remind me of a friend of mine, You look like him pretty much. Marie told Jane.

Note: Reminder means Lembrete.

Well my dear readers,

some of you or many of you are most likely just getting ready packing your bags to go out to somewhere because of the long weekend due to the holiday on Thursday.

Before hitting the road be sure everything is okay with your car(headlight, foglight, windshield wiper, brake light, blinker, tire, brake, oil) .

Maybe you'll spend some time in traffic jam during the trip, any way enjoy it yourself as much as you can.

Vocabulary:

hit the road: pegar a estrada

headlight : farol

foglight: farol de neblina

windshield wiper: limpador de parabrisa

brake light: luz de freio

brake: freio

blinker: pisca-pisca

On time

pontual, na hora exata. Se alguma coisa acontece on time, isto acontece na hora que foi planejada:

• Classes start at 8.00 please be on time.
• The show was very organised it began and finished on time.

O oposto de on time is late : Do not be late. Be on time

In time

Significa chegar/estar a algum lugar em tempo, dentro do tempo programado:

• Please be home in time for lunch.
• I gotta go now. I want to get home in time to see the football match on television.

O oposto de in time é too late : I got home too late to see the football match.

Obs.:

• on the dot, sharply : pontualmente
• just in time : em cima da hora

Here Again!

Hi folks, how about a cup of coffee? I had some problems(Technical ones, I would say) and that´s the reason of my disappeareance. Such problems just came from nothing and my computer just died on but I made it through any way and here I am again like a hurricane(very nice Scorpions´song). I am keeping my fingers crossed for the success of this blog so I am sticking to my goals in helping people to brush up on their English Language.
